Visualization Tools for Teaching and Research

Monday, October 6 @ 6:30pm | Meha Gupta |

Welcome to our Data Visualization Lab! We will explore the essentials of data visualization with a special focus on its applications in the humanities and social sciences. The lab will introduce fascinating examples and examine a range of popular tools, including PowerBI, Tableau, Gephi, Cytoscape, and various AI visualization tools. Practical exercises using a sample dataset will be conducted, where we will collaboratively build a simple interactive visualization that blends data and logic with storytelling. Our goal is to lay a foundation in data visualization techniques and empower you to choose the most suitable tool for your future projects.

Critical Play with Large Language Models

Thursday, October 16 @ 2:30pm | Zach Muhlbauer | Online
In this session, participants will engage with large language models (LLMs) as sites of critical inquiry and creative exploration. We’ll explore techniques for revealing the boundaries, biases, and unexpected behaviors of these systems through structured play and exploratory probing. Through collaborative exercises in adversarial prompting and comparative evaluation across models, participants will learn to design assignments that encourage students to interrogate AI outputs and develop critical understandings of LLMs and their social and material implications.

Picture Perfect: Secrets of Visual Composition

Thursday, October 23 @ 1:00pm | Nadim Essey | Room 5307
This workshop will explore the principles of visual composition to strengthen participants’ ability to create effective, compelling visuals. Practical exercises will help attendees sharpen their understanding of balance, contrast, and design techniques that support both creative and academic work.
